In what is being described as a shocking move, Liverpool is reportedly targeting Middlesborough defender David Wheater for a January transfer.

According to a report by givemefootball.com, Liverpool head coach Roy Hodgson has expressed interest in acquiring Middleborough’s “prize asset,” and may have the monetary capacity to woo Wheater from the Boro.

This isn’t the first time Hodgson has tried to bring Wheater into the Premier League. According to the report, Hodgson made an offer for the versatile defender when he was managing at Fullham, but Wheater decided to stay in the Football League.

NESV has promised money to Liverpool to spend on young and emerging talent in a number of areas on the field come January. Wheater represents definite potential at the central or full back positions.

Fellow Premier League clubs Stoke, West Ham and Everton also have reported interest in acquiring Wheater.
