Daniel Agger Appearing Ready to Leave Anfield as Juventus Targets Center Back

Daniel Agger may have recently returned after three months of injury, but if he does not begin to receive consistent first-team starts, he sees no reason to stay at the club. The feeling may be mutual, and Juventus appears poised to make a run at the 26-year-old Danish center back.

According to Daily Mail, Wolfsburg sporting director Dieter Hoeness was offered Agger, but the German side did not pull the trigger on a deal. Roy Hodgson, though, has denied such.

If Agger is available, Juventus seems the likeliest of suitors. Juve has repeatedly been linked to Agger as it looks to improve its defense. Despite scoring the most goals in Serie A, Turin’s club sits just in fourth in the league table — largely because they just tied for seventh in goals allowed.

Juventus scout Fabio Paratici made the trip to England last week to meet with Damien Comolli about the availability of Agger, Glen Johnson and Alberto Aquilani‘s transfer status.

Agger has suggested that he would be keen on a move, unless he receives consistent first-team football at Anfield.

“If I’m not playing in the Liverpool team on a regular basis, then I am ready to move on,” he said, according to the report. “I have only just returned from three months out injured, so I am in no position, at the moment, to say I must be in the side for every game.

“But once I have made a few appearances and regained full fitness, I would expect to be starting games. If I’m not playing, I can’t see a reason for staying.”

Agger has been a first-team center back at Liverpool for much of the past two seasons, but he’s been challenged for his position by Martin Skrtel and Sotirios Kyrgiakos thus far this campaign.

Juventus, though, may not be able to afford the £8 million ($12.5 million) defender unless it is able to offload some of its own players to create cash available for the transfer.

Still, the combination of Agger’s remarks, Juventus’ interest and needs and the overages to Wolfsburg indicate that a deal seems likely.
