Goalie purists may not approve of his methods, but it’s tough to argue with results.
The Boston Bruins are having another stellar season largely in part to the work of netminder Tim Thomas. The NHL named its stars of the week Monday, and Thomas sits atop that list after a spirited week that left members of the Hurricanes and Avalanche scratching their heads in frustration.
Thomas, who is riding a five-game winning streak, allowed just four goals out of 106 shots faced last week in three wins against the Canes (twice) and Avalanche. His shutout performance against Carolina on Monday ties him for the league lead with seven while his microscopic 1.83 GAA leads all goaltenders.
Thomas is storming his way towards a second Vezina Trophy in the last three years. Should he be named the league’s top tender again this season, he will join Tiny Thompson (four) and Fred Brimsek (two) as Bruins’ goalies with multiple crowns.
For his efforts, the Bruins will donate $1,000 in his name to a children’s charity of Thomas’ choosing. Tampa Bay Lightning forward Steven Stamkos and New Jersey Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur were named second and third stars, respectively.
