Bill Belichick‘s decision to bench Wes Welker for the Patriots’ first offensive possession against the Jets wasn’t the difference in Sunday’s game, but defensive lineman Vince Wilfork would not have made the same decision as his coach.

According to ESPN.com, Wilfork saw no harm in Welker’s comments on Thursday and felt the game was too important to lose Welker for a series. Wilfork, however, didn’t believe the benching was a factor in the Patriot’s 28-21 loss to the Jets and isn’t challgening Belichick’s decision.

“I don’t think it was a big deal, the comments Wes said or the benching,” Wilfork said on WEEI on Monday. “People have opinions, and in my opinion, I wouldn’t have done it because of what the game meant. To each his own. I’m not questioning the head man’s judgment at all — it’s just my opinion.”

Welker supposedly was benched for comments he made in a news conference that mocked Jets coach Rex Ryan‘s foot fetish.
