Less than half a year after abruptly retiring from his position as Cubs manager in the middle of the season, Lou Piniella will be returning to the game in a front-office role.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Piniella will become a part of the Giants organization, joining the World Series champions as a consultant, advising on player movement and scouting players.

Piniella left baseball in large part to spend more time with his ailing mother in Florida, and he will be able to stay in the Sunshine State to fulfill his duties to the Giants.

The 67-year-old's relationship with Giants general manager Brian Sabean goes back to the 1980s, when they were in the Yankees organization together. Piniella was interviewed for the Giants' managerial position in 2006, and when he took himself out of consideration, that job was given to current skipper Bruce Bochy.

Piniella has three World Series titles, two as a player and one as a manager.
