Entering Saturday’s Manchester derby between Manchester United and Manchester City, Wayne Rooney had scored 153 career goals. However, he scored the best goal of his professional career in this match.

In the 77th minute, Rooney broke a 1-1 tie and scored the game-winning goal to seal the match.

Off of a David Silva deflection, Rooney positioned himself for an overhead kick and succeeded in putting the ball past City goalkeeper Joe Hart.

After the game, Rooney was asked if this was the best goal of his professional career.

“I think so,” Rooney told Sky Sports. “I saw it come into the box and thought, ‘Why not?’ Thankfully, it finished up in the top corner.

“I was trying to get in a good position for when Nani crossed it. Nine times out of 10, they go over the crossbar. Today, it ended up in the top corner. It is instinct. You don’t have time to think about it.”

The amazing goal not only bested the third-place team, but also added three points to Manchester United’s lead in the Premier League table. Man U leads with 57 points, Arsenal trails with 50 points and Manchester City remains in third with 49 points.
