With his contract expiring next year, Newcastle United defender Jose Enrique has been a major subject of speculation this season. But despite the rumors, the left back insists that he’s happy playing at St. James’ Park, according to The Telegraph.

“If I have to continue here [at Newcastle], I’m happy. If I have to go to another club, I’m happy in England. If I have to go to another league, I’m happy,” Enrique said. “I just want to play football — it’s my life and it’s best for me.”

Enrique’s name has been tossed around because of his refusal to discuss a new contract with Newcastle until its Premier League future is certain.

The 25-year-old Spaniard previously told Goal.com that he wants to “win things” and that while he’s “OK” at Newcastle, he aspires to do more.

Liverpool, which has been searching for answers at left back, remains one possible destination for Enrique.

Just a few weeks ago, former Liverpool captain, Phil Thompson, said that a move to Anfield this summer was a “done deal.” But Newcastle general manager Alan Pardew refuted Thompson’s claims, saying that Enrique is under contract with Newcastle and that he wants him to stay with the club.

Enrique has enjoyed an impressive season nevertheless and will likely remain in high demand until the situation is resolved.
