The sports media world received a bit of shocking news on Thursday afternoon, when Dick Ebersol resigned from NBC Sports, according to Richard Sandomir of The New York Times.

Ebersol has led NBC Sports since 1989, but he "could not come to an agreement on a new contract," according to the report.

He is expected to remain with NBC until June but will not be involved in negotiating for the rights to broadcast the Olympics in 2014 and 2016.

Sandomir reported via Twitter that Ebersol will be replaced by Mark Lazarus, the current president of NBC Sports Cable Group.
