Broken bats are relatively common in the MLB. But in college baseball, where the players hit with metal bats, it's an extremely rare occurrence.
That's precisely what happened Friday when Florida catcher Mike Zunino stepped up to the plate against Vanderbilt's Mark Lamm in the eighth inning of the teams' College World Series matchup. With Vandy trailing by a run, Lamm, a sixth-round pick of the Atlanta Braves, delivered a 94-mile per hour fastball that promptly sliced Zunino's bat in two.
Unfortunately for Vandy, they were not awarded any runs on the play, and the Gators would hold on for a 6-4 win to advance to the CWS championship.
