NEW YORK — Dustin Pedroia is returning to Boston to have his right knee examined and faces the possibility of surgery, a story that was first reported by The Boston Globe.

Pedroia told the Globe that he will have the knee looked at to determine the severity of an injury suffered May 16 in a game against Baltimore. The report indicated that surgery could be immediate depending on what the procedure discovers, and that Pedroia could miss up to a month.

Coming off a year cut short by a broken left foot, it would be a blow to the struggling Pedroia. After going 1-for-3 in the Red Sox' 11-6 win in New York on Wednesday night, his average sat at .247.

Pedroia told the Globe that the knee issue, a result of him hitting it on the ground making a defensive play in the first inning of that game against Baltimore, has hampered him at the plate.

Fortunately for Boston, an MRI on the left shoulder of infielder Jed Lowrie came back clean and he could take over for Pedroia on an interim basis.

According to NESN's Heidi Watney, Red Sox reliever Bobby Jenks, who was placed on the DL with back tightness prior to Wednesday's game, will also head back to Boston.
