The career of Wily Mo Pena has proved that it is very difficult to make it in the major leagues on home run power alone. After being designated for assignment last week, the slugger was released by the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday.

Pena, who was signed for a $675,000 minor league contract in December, amassed only 46 major league plate appearances this season, as he was called up primarily as a designated hitter when Arizona played in American League ballparks.

Known for his tremendous power but overly agressive approach at the plate, Pena has hit .196 with five home runs, 19 strikeouts and no walks this season.

The Diamondbacks were the outfielder's fourth major league team, following the Reds, Red Sox and Nationals.
