Bruins Live Blog: Mika Zibanejad Scores in OT to Lift Senators to 2-1 Win Over B's in Preseason Opener in Ottawa Final, Senators 2, Bruins 1 (OT): The Senators take this one, as 2011 first-rounder Mika Zibanejad blasts home a one-timer 3:17 into overtime to give Ottawa the 2-1 victory.

Brian Lee and Nick Foligno pick up the assists as the sixth-overall pick Zibanejad makes a strong early impression on the home folks in Ottawa.

There were some positives for Boston, most notably the play of Tuukka Rask, who finished 34 saves. Lane MacDermid scored the Bruins' lone goal, as the young tough guy scored for the second night in a row after tallying once in Tuesday's Black and White Game. Defenseman Matt Bartkowski also turned in a strong effort, throwing his weight around while leading the Bruins in ice time at 25:30.

The Bruins return home to practice on Thursday, then will host the New York Islanders in their next exhibition game Friday night at the Garden.

Overtime, 1:02, 1-1: Chris Phillips almost ends it for Ottawa, but clangs one off the crossbar and out of play.

Overtime, 0:00, 1-1: The extra session is under way in Ottawa, with the game deadlocked at 1-1 despite a 34-22 edge in shots for the Senators.

End Regulation, 1-1: And just what every preseason exhibition needs – overtime. This one can't be settled in 60 minutes, so we'll play at least five more.

Third Period, 16:45, 1-1: Not much doing of late in Ottawa as it remains deadlocked at 1-1, but the Senators have a chance in the Boston zone after a Bruins icing with just over three minutes to play.

Third Period, 11:14, 1-1: The Senators have a 30-17 edge in shots and have carried the play for much of the night, but Tuukka Rask has kept the Bruins in it with 29 saves so far.

Good sign for Boston that Rask has been so sharp. Less encouraging that the offense has looked so sluggish.

Third Period, 8:45, 1-1: The Bruins had some decent movement and looks on that man advantage, with Pouliot getting the best chance on a one-timer, but Boston comes up empty on the power play once again.

Third Period, 6:45, 1-1: The Bruins get their latest chance on the power play as Jared Cowen gets called for slashing after getting tangled up with Jamie Arniel.

The Bruins may have gotten away with one there, as it appeared it was Arniel that slashed and broke Cowen's stick.

Third Period, 5:43, 1-1: The Bruins kill off another penalty as Pouliot is back on the ice. Ottawa now 0 for 4 on the power play in the game.

Third Period, 3:43, 1-1: The Bruins are shorthanded again, with Pouliot going off on another boarding call.

This was a tough call, but it won't take much to draw a boarding call with the new emphasis the league has put on calling that infraction. It will take the players some time to adjust to that change.

Third Period, 0:00, 1-1: The final frame is under way in Ottawa. Rask, who has been Boston's best player in this one, remains in net as expected as he will play the whole game to start the preseason.

End Second Period, 1-1: The first 40 minutes are in the books and nothing has been settled yet after the teams exchanged goals in the second to head into the third tied at 1-1.

The Bruins continued to excel on the penalty kill as they killed off Ference's late boarding call and the sides will open the third at even strength. Ottawa continues to dominate in shots, holding a 22-13 edge. But Tuukka Rask has been up to the task so far with a strong preseason debut.

Second Period, 17:30, 1-1: The Bruins are down a man again, this time with Andrew Ference sent off for boarding.

Second Period, 16:14, 1-1: The Bruins' penalty kill continues to click, as the Senators can't convert that chance and Thornton is back on the ice.

Second Period, 14:14, 1-1: The Bruins are shorthanded again, as Thornton is sent to the box for holding the stick.

Second Period, 13:07, 1-1: Rask flashes the glove to deny a bid from Mark Parrish.

Parrish is a veteran in Ottawa's camp on a tryout like Chris Clark with Boston. Parrish has had a few chances, but Clark's had a pretty quiet night so far. Clark has been impressive in scrimmages, but still faces uphill battle to earn contract on deep Bruins team.

Second Period, 10:30, 1-1: The Senators have changed goalies, with Alex Auld coming on to replace Craig Anderson. Both had brief stints as Bruins backups, though Anderson never actually got into a game with the Bruins.

Rask remains in goal for Boston and is expected to play the entire game.

Second Period, 8:18, 1-1: The Senators answer right back with Brian Lee scoring the equalizer.

The defense scored through a screen in front with Nick Foligno and Peter Regin pickin up the assists.

Second Period, 7:01, Bruins 1-0: The Bruins strike first as the tough guys combine for a goal.

Rookie Lane MacDermid bangs home a rebound of a Shawn Thornton shot, with Adam McQuaid picking up the secondary assist. MacDermid also scored Tuesday in the Black and White Game and had a scoring chance in the first period of this one. Youngster showing some skill to go with his physical play.

Second Period, 5:46, 0-0: The Bruins fail to convert that power play as well, and are now 0 for 3 on the man advantage. Jamie Tardif did get a good chance in front, then Rask had to make a stop as the Senators had a 3 on 1 when Lee came out of the box.

Second Period, 3:46, 0-0: The Bruins will get another chance on the man advantage as Ottawa defenseman Brian Lee is sent to the box for interference.

Second Period, 0:00, 0-0: The middle frame is under way in Ottawa with the game still scoreless despite the Senators having a 12-5 edge in shots in the opening frame.

End First Period, 0-0: The opening period of the preseason is in the books for the Bruins, with both sides still looking for their first goal as it's scoreless after one in Ottawa.

First Period, 16:22, 0-0: Old friend Sergei Gonchar with the biggest threat of the night, pinching in to the right circle for a one-time blast that Rask is able to fend off to keep it scoreless.

First Period, 14:44, 0-0: Not much doing on that abbreviated power play either, as this one remains scoreless with the sides back at even strength with just over five minutes left in the first period.

First Period, 12:44, 0-0: The sides are even now as the Senators get called for too many men after playing with six skaters for an extended time there on that power play. Boston will get another brief power play after some 4-on-4 play.

First Period, 11:38, 0-0: The Bruins will be shorthanded for the first time after a long delayed penalty call. Well over a minute of action between the call on Pouliot for interference and the Bruins finally gaining control for the whistle.

More than halfway through the period and the Bruins have just one shot on net.

First Period, 6:57, 0-0: The Bergeron line creates some pressure in front. Tardif nearly had the setup in front there, but it will be interesting to see the chemistry between Bergeron and Pouliot. They've been skating together in practice and Pouliot could be auditioning to replace Recchi on that line.

First Period, 2:53, 0-0: I know you're not going to believe this, but the Bruins were not actually able to convert that power-play chance. Sure that's not going to be a trend or anything though, the Bruins are normally so effective on the man advantage.

First Period, 0:53, 0-0: The Bruins get a quick power-play chance in the opening minute as Ottawa defenseman Jared Cowen is sent off for elbowing.

First Period, 0:00, 0-0: And they're under way in Ottawa, with Tuukka Rask and Craig Anderson starting the night in the clubs' respective goals. Knight and Kampfer are officially the scratches for Boston.

7:30 p.m.: This one's almost under way in Ottawa. One quick note is that the A's for this game are being worn by Patrice Bergeron, Chris Kelly and Andrew Ference. No one will have a C with Chara not playing.

Bergeron has been an assistant captain, but the Bruins will need a new second alternate with Mark Recchi's retirement. Can't read too much into tonight's choices, but Ference is certainly a strong candidate for an A, along with Shawn Thornton, Milan Lucic, Kelly and Dennis Seidenberg, among others. Plenty of worthy choices. One of the strengths of the Bruins is that deep leadership group, and none of those guys need a letter on their jersey to step up when necessary.

7:20 p.m.: Based on reports out of warm-ups, here's how the Bruins' lines should look like in this one:

Forwards:

Pouliot-Bergeron-Tardif

Caron-Seguin-Arniel

Sauve-Spooner-Clark

MacDermid-Kelly-Thornton

Defense:

Ference-Cohen

Bartkowski-McQuaid

Warsofsky-Hamilton

If that holds true, then Jared Knight and Steven Kampfer will be the scratches from the group that traveled to Ottawa.

7 p.m.: Bruins captain, and former Senator, Zdeno Chara didn't make the trip to Ottawa to face his old team. He's been nursing a bruised left leg after being hit with a shot in practice on Monday, but did return to the ice for practice Wednesday morning.

Joe Corvo, who also played for the Senators, also stayed home after tweaking his groin in Tuesday's Black and White Game, while David Krejci also suffered a minor groin injury in Wednesday's practice. He was not scheduled to play in this game anyway.

Chris Kelly will be returning to Ottawa, where he spent his entire NHL career before coming to Boston at last year's trade deadline. Kelly's already made his return to his old stomping grounds, as his Bruins debut was actually in Ottawa last February.

It could be a more emotional night for rookie Ryan Spooner, who grew up in Ottawa and will have plenty of friends and family on hand to watch him in thise one.

6:40 p.m.: The Bruins announced which the players would make the trip to Ottawa on Tuesday.

For a refresher, here's the breakdown.

Forwards: Jamie Arniel, Patrice Bergeron, Jordan Caron, Chris Clark, Chris Kelly, Jared Knight, Lane MacDermid, Benoit Pouliot, Max Sauve, Tyler Seguin, Ryan Spooner, Jamie Tardif, Shawn Thornton

Defensemen: Matt Bartkowski, Colby Cohen, Andrew Ference, Dougie Hamilton, Steven Kampfer, Adam McQuaid, David Warsofsky

Goaltenders: Anton Khudobin, Tuukka Rask

Two scratches will have to be made as the Bruins have brought one extra forward and one extra defenseman. Bruins coach Claude Julien said Wednesday morning that Rask will play the whole game in goal.

The Senators' projected lineup features some familiar faces, with Bobby Butler a Marlborough, Mass. native and Sergei Gonchar, Alex Auld and Craig Anderson all one-time Bruins. Anderson and Auld are scheduled to split the goaltending duties in this one. There might not be much rough stuff in this one, as Ottawa tough guys Matt Carkner, Chris Neil, Zenon Konopka, Francis Lessard and Zack Smith are all scheduled to have the night off.

The full projected lineup is below.

Forwards

Nikita Filatov-Mika Zibanejad- Bobby Butler

Kaspars Daugavins-Corey Locke-Mark Parrish

Defense

6:20 p.m.: The Bruins are getting ready to kick off their exhibition season in Ottawa, with the opening faceoff against the Senators for for just over an hour from now.

The Bruins made their first cuts from camp earlier on Wednesday, but there is still plenty of work to be done to whittle the camp down to the final roster as 48 players remain in contention. Some 22 of them traveled north to Ottawa, all but two of which will get a chance in this game to state a case for sticking around longer.

Those evaluations will be a big part of Wednesday night's activities, as Bruins coach Claude Julien explained before leaving for Ottawa.

"We're still going through some evaluations on a lot of players now," Julien said. "You want to see where your guys from last year are and at the same time those young guys that are obviously trying to leave us with an impression or at least fight for a spot on the hockey club. So we'll get a chance to do that tonight. [It's] a typical exhibition game where you get a chance to evaluate players and where they're at, whether it's veterans or young players."

8 a.m. ET: The Bruins will finally get to take out their frustrations on some real opposition.

After playing an intra-squad scrimmage in Providence on Tuesday, the Bruins open their real preseason slate Wednesday night in Ottawa. It's the first of six exhibition games scheduled for the Bruins, and the first of two against their Northeast Division rivals from Ottawa, as the Senators will come to the Garden on Sept. 29.

The Bruins will take on the Senators without their captain in this one, as Zdeno Chara is scheduled to stay behind to rest the left leg contusion suffered when hit by a shot in practice on Monday.

A number of other veterans will get the night off as well as the Bruins look to evaluate some of the youngsters vying for spots with the big club. Forwards Jared Knight, Ryan Spooner and Max Sauve, who have each impressed in previous preseasons, are making the trip, while 2011 top pick Dougie Hamilton is also heading to Ottawa and could see action. The Bruins are taking one extra forward and an extra defenseman, so not everyone traveling will get to play.

There are also some veteran newcomers worth watching. Benoit Pouliot is scheduled to make the trip, and could get a chance to play on a line with Patrice Bergeron. That duo has been paired in drills and scrimmages early in camp.

Chris Clark, in camp on a tryout, will also get a chance to state his case in this game. New defenseman Joe Corvo, however, is not making the trip after suffering a mild lower-body injury in Tuesday's Black and White Game.

The puck drops at 7:30 p.m. in Ottawa, so check back here for updates on all the action.
