Manchester United and Leeds Supporters Must Stop Disgraceful Chants When the Two Teams Meet Whenever Manchester United faces local rivals Leeds, the same story seems to play itself out. A small, vocal minority of supporters on one side sings or chants about a tragic moment in the history of the other. The other side responds in kind.

Malcolm Clarke, of the Football Supporters' Federation, told the Daily Mail, "This crosses the line. It's not acceptable for supporters to celebrate or mock the death of another supporter.

"Banners or songs or chants, it's all the same. It's all disgusting stuff. I am sure the vast majority of fans of both clubs would agree with this."

In April 2000, two Leeds supporters were murdered in Istanbul, Turkey. They were there to see Leeds take on Turkish club Galatasaray and were stabbed to death during clashes between groups of supporters.

On Tuesday, a few Manchester United supporters unveiled a banner reading 'Istanbul.' Leeds supporters responded with chants about the 1958 plane crash in Munich, Germany.

Twenty three members of Manchester United’s travelling delegation – including players, staff, journalists and supporters – died when its plane attempted to take from a snow and slush filled runway.

The game ended with visiting Manchester United winning 3-0, behind goals from Michael Owen and the ageless Ryan Giggs. The win was stained by the chanting and arrests of 21 people in and around Leeds' Elland Road stadium.

Saying "this needs to stop" is not breaking any new ground. So consider this a repetition of what everybody knows. It's gotten old. It's not a good look. The rest of the world frowns on your shenanigans.
