David Ortiz Says He Wants to Return to Red Sox, Sets Record Straight on Yankees CommentsDavid Ortiz raised some eyebrows recently when he fielded a question about the possibility of jumping ship and playing for the Yankees next season. On Thursday, Ortiz tried to clear that up some.

Ortiz was named the 2011 Roberto Clemente Award winner on Thursday night, and he spoke after the ceremony about his future with the Red Sox. The designated hitter made it clear that he would like to return to Boston.

“Of course I would like to come back,” the slugger said, according to MLB.com “We have a lot of things going on right now, so once they go through all this stuff — GM and manager things — I think they’re going to start talking to the players. We’ll see. We’ve got time.”

The free-agent-to-be also spoke about a recent interview with ESPN in which he entertained the idea of playing for the Yankees in the future.

“I never said I would sign with the Yankees. No, don’t be making [stuff] up,” he said. “They asked me if I would play for the Yankees, and I said I would think about it. But I didn’t confirm to nobody that I would play for the Yankees. I’m still a Red Sox, aren’t I?”

When speaking to Colleen Dominguez last week, Ortiz said this about playing for the Yankees:

“It’s great from what I hear. It’s a good situation to be involved in. Who doesn’t want to be involved in a great situation where everything goes the right way?”
