Joe Theismann Says Tony Romo Is 'Doing Things Pop Warner Kids Would Get Benched For' Tony Romo has taken a fair share of criticism for his play this season and in the past, but very few have been harder on the Cowboys quarterback than former NFL quarterback Joe Theismann.

Theismann appeared on an NFL.com podcast and spoke about Romo's struggles, particularly with turning the ball over too frequently, and the former Redskin came down hard on Romo.

"Tony Romo continues to do things to hurt his football team," Theismann told NFL.com's Dave Dameshek. "He doesn't understand how to play the quarterback position. Somebody had to say it, and I just said it. Tony, you have to start proving to everyone you understand football. You're doing things that Pop Warner kids would get benched for."

While Theismann's notion that no one is "saying it" in regards to Tony Romo's struggles is completely false, Romo has been pretty bad this season.

The low point came on Sunday when he and the Cowboys choked away a 24-point lead to the Lions, a collapse strongly aided by Romo's three second-half interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns.

"I think the Cowboys seriously have to start looking to the future," Theismann said. "We've seen Romo do a lot of different things, and he was very courageous with the ribs, but this game was unforgivable, at this level or even on a college level."

Romo wasn't the only object of Theismann's review. He also called Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez a "middle of the road" quarterback, and he also called Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers "the best pure passer in the history of football."
