Derrick Rose was born in Chicago, and he’s now the best player on the hometown Chicago Bulls. It’s only fitting that he uses his sneakers as an homage to the Windy City.

That’s exactly what he’ll do with his new Adidas AdiZero Rose 2 kicks that he’ll debut on Christmas Day when the Bulls head to Los Angeles to open the season against Kobe Bryant and the Lakers.

Rose’s new shoes pay tribute to “The L,” the city’s public transit line (think “The T” in Boston) with a map of the lines inside the shoe. The black and red shoes also prominently display the letter L on the heel.

The Chicago Tribune points out that the sneakers’ metallic look is supposed to be a nod to the look of the train cars, and the blue line running down the side of the shoe is to represent, what else, the system’s blue line.
