Steve Gerrard, Kenny Dalglish Feel Sympathy for Anthony Gerrard, Cousin of LFC CaptainMoments after the Carling Cup final concluded, Steve Gerrard whispered something into the ear of the man who had just missed the deciding penalty.

Anthony Gerrard was inconsolable after the defeat, but Steve Gerrard and Kenny Dalglish still offered him words of encouragement.

It was natural for the LFC captain to postpone his own celebration. After all, 26-year-old Anthony Gerrard is his younger cousin.

The Cardiff City defender came into Sunday's final in the 98th minute, and was involved until the last moment. He slotted his team's fifth and final spot-kick wide (to the left), giving LFC the victory.

Steve would not reveal what he said to Anthony, as some thing are best kept within the family.

"It was always going to be that one of us was sad and one celebrating," Steve Gerrard told the BBC. "I've got mixed emotions. Obviously I'm delighted to win the cup for our supporters, but I feel for Anthony and Cardiff.

"It doesn't matter what I say to him –- he's going to be down. I'll be there for him and all the family will be behind him."

Dalglish, the most neutral of parties in this family affair, saw the outcome strictly in soccer terms. The problem with penalty shootouts is that they come at the end of tie game. In the league, both teams would settle for a point, and move on. In knockout competitions — especially finals — one team has to lose.

The LFC manager has seen such anguish during his decades in the game, and spared a thought for the younger Gerrard in the postgame press conference.

"The game has got to be settled some way, and the choice is penalty kicks," he said. "We feel for Anthony Gerrard, who missed the vital one that meant we won the trophy.

"I think every footballer feels for somebody that does that, but for us we're delighted to have won a trophy. Throughout the whole competition we've deserved the victory."
