Kyle Smerer thought he was just the lucky winner of an in-game promotion at Safeco Field this weekend. The 13-year-old would run in from right field in between innings, steal second base and then sprint back to the outfield.

When he got to second base, though, he found something much better than just a base waiting for him.

Kyle was surprised to find his father, First Sergeant Steven Smerer, dressed as an umpire waiting for him at second base. Sergeant Smerer had been serving in Afghanistan, and it marked the first time in four months that he was able to see his son.
