If Walter Szulc Jr.‘s first time kayaking is also his last, no one would blame him.

That’s because Szulc Jr. had a close encounter with a great white shark off the coast of Massachusetts over the weekend, according to MSNBC.com.

Szulc Jr., who was kayaking for the first time, was out on the water off Nauset Beach on Saturday when sunbathers noticed the shark following him and another man. The other kayaker quickly paddled in, but it took Szulc Jr., a native of Manchester, N.H., a little bit longer to notice the shark’s dorsal fin once beach-goers started yelling at the men, according to the Cape Cod Times.

By the time Szulc Jr. noticed the shark, it “was pretty much right there,” he reportedly said.

“It was good-sized, it had a fin sticking out, so I just turned and paddled,” he told WHDH.com.

The shark was believed to be about 12-14 feet long, or as witness Debbie Sutton called it, “crazy big.”

Three sharks have been seen searching for food in the waters off Cape Cod, according to the Cape Cod Times, and it’s believed that a large number of seals in the area is the reason why.

Nauset Beach was subsequently closed on Saturday, but the shark definitely created quite the spectacle.
