Michael Phelps continues to rewrite the Olympic record books every time he dives into the pool, and he added to his legend once again on Thursday in London.

Phelps won his 20th career Olympic medal — his 16th gold — by winning the 200 individual medley. It marks Phelps' third consecutive gold in that event, making him the first Olympian swimmer to win the same event in three straight Games.

Phelps' American teammate Ryan Lochte finished second. Phelps' time of 1:54:27 fell just short of the world record, which is held by Lochte.
