NFL: USA TODAY Sports-ArchiveThere might be a reason why Danny Amendola has been invisible during the New England Patriots’ first four games after all.

The wide receiver admitted to The Boston Herald’s Karen Guregian that he underwent surgery in the offseason to repair a torn groin muscle he suffered during last year’s preseason. Guregian said Amendola “grudgingly” revealed this information, as he didn’t want to excuse his recent lack of production.

“It really doesn’t matter anymore, whether I did, or didn’t (have the surgery),” Amendola said Thursday. “I’m not going to make excuses. I don’t want anything to seem like it’s an excuse.”

Amendola has only caught three passes for 16 yards this season, and those all came Week 1. Since then, he’s only had four catches, all of which were negated by penalties. But Amendola insisted to the Herald that his surgery isn’t the reason for his nearly nonexistent numbers.

“I’m over it. I don’t feel the need to talk about it,” Amendola told Guregian. “It’s in the past. I feel great right now. I’m trying to get open on every play. It’s not slowing me down. I feel great today. That’s what I’m grateful for and thankful for. I’m just trying to prepare for this week.”
