Perhaps St. Louis is in the cards for Andrew Miller.

Andrew MillerDerrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch wrote Tuesday he’s been “told a few times” that the Cardinals will target Miller in free agency this offseason.

The Cardinals are looking for a left-handed bullpen upgrade over Randy Choate, according to Goold. Miller, of course, fits the bill, as he’s coming off his best major league season to date. There’s even been talk Miller could slide into a closer’s role wherever he lands, though Trevor Rosenthal currently holds that gig in St. Louis.

Miller has revived his career since shifting to the bullpen full-time with the Boston Red Sox in 2012. The former first-round pick posted a 2.02 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and 14.9 strikeouts per nine innings in 73 regular-season relief appearances split between Boston and Baltimore this season. He tossed 7 1/3 scoreless innings with the Orioles in the postseason.

Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington said Friday he expects to reach out to Miller this offseason. The 29-year-old certainly pitched his way into a lucrative contract, though, so his free agency should be interesting.
