Former NHLer Sean Avery will not make his off-Broadway debut this week, and it’s all pizza’s fault.
The enforcer, who made his career ruffling opponents’ feathers during his 12 years in the NHL, took his agitating ways to the acting world, and it cost him his job. Avery was set to star in “Negative Is Everything,” but he quit the production just two days before it was scheduled to open after throwing a tantrum when a stage manager offered him pizza, according to the New York Post’s Page Six.
“He’s a playwright’s worst nightmare,” play author Christy Smith-Sloman said.
The Post reported that Avery snapped Tuesday when a young stage manager named Natalie asked him if he’d like a piece of pizza. Avery misunderstood her, reportedly believing she called him a swear word, and embarked on a tirade.
Avery then went up to the director of the play and said “Don’t you know who I am?!” before storming off.
Smith-Sloman said she doesn’t plan to bring Avery back, as they’re already having an understudy replace him.
“It’s unbelievable he would do this two days before we open,” Smith-Sloman said. “At this point I don’t want him to be a part of this production. He can’t call people pieces of s–t and say, ‘Do you know who I am?’ (He) can’t threaten people.”
