Benson Henderson Prefers To Let His Fighting Do Most Of The Talking

When asked how he would hype his co-main event clash against Donald Cerrone this Sunday night, former UFC and WEC lightweight champion Benson Henderson answered succinctly that it’s the media’s job to perform on the page and his to perform inside the Octagon.

“I’m not really too good at that,” Henderson said. “I leave that to you guys, you writers, you pundits, you guys who put actions into words and give them scope and meaning. You guys can do that. For me, I show up to fight. I worry less about trying to sell it. At this point in my career, if you don’t know who I am, if you haven’t seen me, if you don’t know what I’m about – then you can look it up. I’m all about giving that 110%, giving a furious pace, getting after it. As far as putting it into words, I’m not that good at that. That’s your job. My job is to give a great performance and that’s what I’m aiming to do.”

Fair enough.

Three fights and about 17 months removed from dropping the 155-pound strap at UFC 164, “Smooth” still carries that championship glitter into each of his bouts, regardless of opponent or spot on the card.

It’s almost impossible to tarnish someone who has shined so brightly to have won a UFC belt with a loss or two, let alone Henderson with his three successful UFC lightweight title defenses and nine wins inside the Octagon.
