Joe Montana: Tom Brady Ordered Footballs To Be Deflated But Not A Big Deal

Tom Brady might want to earmuff it for his boyhood idol’s DeflateGate theory.

San Francisco 49ers legend Joe Montana believes the New England Patriots quarterback is responsible for the under-inflated footballs that were used in the team’s AFC Championship Game rout of the Indianapolis Colts. According to Montana, if the footballs were changed, it was per Brady’s request.

“If I ever want a ball a certain way, I don’t do it myself. So, somebody did it for him,” Montana said Thursday in Phoenix, per the Boston Globe. “But I don’t know why everybody is making a big deal out of trying to figure out who did it. It’s pretty simple. If it was done, it was done for a reason. There is only one guy that does it. Nobody else cares what the ball feels like.”

Just because Montana is pointing the finger at Brady doesn’t mean he believes this entire controversy is a big deal, though. The Hall of Famer took more issue with the NFL’s rules on the handling of the footballs than Brady possibly being behind DeflateGate.

“I mean it’s easy to figure out who did it,” Montana said. “Did Tom do it? No, but Tom likes the balls that way, obviously, or you wouldn’t have 11 of them that way without him complaining because as a quarterback, you know how you like the ball. It’s a stupid thing to even be talking about because they shouldn’t have the rule anyway.”

Montana’s comments came on the same day Brady posted a Throwback Thursday picture on Facebook of his younger self dressed up as the 49ers signal-caller for Halloween.
