PHOENIX — Richard Sherman really couldn’t miss Super Bowl XLIX for the birth of his son, could he?

The Seattle Seahawks certainly seem to be entertaining the thought.

Sherman’s girlfriend is due sometime in early February, and the Seahawks cornerback hasn’t confirmed this week whether he would skip the birth, if it comes on Super Bowl Sunday, or the big game against the New England Patriots.

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said Friday in a joint news conference with Patriots counterpart Bill Belichick that the decision rests on Sherman’s shoulders.

“Well, that’s up to Richard,” Carroll said. “He knows he has the opportunity to face a big decision. Whenever our players have a personal or family issue that comes up, it’s always about family first, and they have to decide what’s best for them. And I support them, so wherever he goes with that, if he’s faced with that decision, we’ll support him.

It seems like Carroll already has a name picked out for Sherman’s son.

“We’ll see how that goes,” Carroll said. “We wish him luck, and I can’t wait to see little Petey.”
