CHICAGO — Chicago Blackhawks star Patrick Kane had surgery Wednesday to repair a broken left collarbone, likely sidelining the dynamic winger for the rest of the season unless the team makes a deep run in the NHL playoffs.

Team physician Dr. Michael Terry and Dr. Bradley Merk performed the surgery, and Terry says a full recovery will take “approximately 12 weeks.” According to that timetable, Kane would return around the Western Conference Final, if the team makes it that far.

The Blackhawks placed Kane on long-term injured reserve earlier in the day and recalled forward Teuvo Teravainen from the Rockford IceHogs of the American Hockey League.

Kane, who leads Chicago with 27 goals and 37 assists, was injured Tuesday night a 3-2 shootout victory over the Florida Panthers.
