Daniel Sturridge: Liverpool Has Same Mentality This Season As In 2013-14

Daniel Sturridge notices something familiar in this current Liverpool team.

Sturridge said Thursday that the Reds have adopted the same mental approach as they had during last season’s title challenge, according to LiverpoolFC.com. Liverpool won 11 straight games toward the end of the season, and Sturridge sees similar characteristics in its current in-form side.

“I think so,” Sturridge said when asked if there were similarities between the two Liverpool teams. “In terms of how we go out there with a positive attitude, try to play our football, try to break down the opposition and create chances to score goals.

“Sometimes maybe we don’t create as we did last season, but I feel that as long as we’re winning games, that’s all that matters.”

Liverpool now is the hottest team in the Premier League, having taken 33 of 39 available points during its current 13-game unbeaten run. Liverpool’s has positioned itself as a leading contender for a top-four finish in the Premier League, and manager Brendan Rodgers is aiming to finish as high as second place.

However, Sturridge isn’t thinking that far ahead with just eight games remaining. He focuses on achieving the goals the Reds set for themselves last summer, instead.

“It is important to secure fourth place and then from there look on,” Sturridge said. “To finish in the top four is realistic for us, it’s what we’re aiming to do, and if we can get higher than that then perfect.

“If we can finish in the top four, then we can push on and challenge for the title again next season.

Liverpool now looks familiar to Sturridge, and Reds everywhere should grow accustomed to hearing this refrain from him and other Reds in the coming weeks and months.
