Kings’ Nik Stauskas Now ‘Sauce Castillo’ Thanks To Closed Captioning Error

During Tuesday night’s Sacramento Kings-Philadelphia 76ers broadcast, one of the greatest athlete nicknames was born.

Kings rookie shooting guard Nik Stauskas hit a 3-pointer during the game, prompting the Sixers announcer respond, “Stauskas, hitting the three.” Pretty mundane, right? It would have been, but whoever was doing the closed captioning heard “Sauce Castillo hit the three.”

And when Philly fan and SPIN contributor Andrew Unterberger pointed out the hilarious mistake on Twitter, Stauskas immediately had a new nickname. Multiple sports news outlets took the story and ran, and it eventually found its way to Stauskas himself.

Stauskas’ teammates and the Kings gave “Sauce Castillo” shout-outs on Twitter, and it became a trending topic Thursday. Basketball Reference even updated his nickname on its website.

So, whether he likes it or not, it looks as though Stauskas has a new nickname from here on out.
