Brendan Rodgers ‘Hungry’ To Challenge EPL Elite, End Liverpool’s Title Drought

Brendan Rodgers said he can accomplish something six of his predecessors were unable to do: win English soccer’s league championship as Liverpool’s manager.

Rodgers told reporters Monday he can help Liverpool end its 25-year title drought and bring the Premier League trophy to Anfield, according to the Liverpool Echo. Rodgers led the Reds agonizingly close to the promised land in 2013-14, but they failed to repeat last season’s challenge for the Premier League title in 2014-15.

Rodgers said last week no one is more suited for the Liverpool manager’s job at this moment in time than he is. He doubled down on that idea Monday.

“Absolutely,” Rodgers said when asked whether he can lead Liverpool to the Premier League title. “When I came in here, it was a long way off. The club was eighth and you would never have even talked about (winning the title).

“I think it’s a mark of how the club has moved forward, that there’s such disappointment around that we weren’t challenging this year.

“But when you have a sense of perspective and a sense of reality, that allows you to look forward with a greater hope that we can really push on again next season. I have absolutely no doubt it will happen.

“It is difficult, but you can’t just accept it. You have to continue to fight. Where we are at now is probably par for where we sit in amongst it (the competition).

“But we can’t accept that, we have to continue to find ways to develop players, work to the idea of how the owners want to work here and find that way to break that. That’s something that I’m very hungry to do. And it’s something I won’t rest in my time here until we have.”

Liverpool likely will be outside of the top four places in the standings when the season ends next month. While it’s a far cry from last season’s second-place finish, Rodgers is keen to find solutions to Liverpool’s problems both within the group and in the summer transfer market.

It will take another 12 months to discover to what extent Rodgers can push Liverpool forward.
