Picking high in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft is bittersweet. It indicates an unsuccessful season the year prior, yet it represents a golden opportunity to add a special talent.

The Boston Red Sox have the luxury — if you want to consider the bright side — of picking seventh in the 2015 draft, which kicks off Monday. It’s the second time in three seasons the Red Sox own the No. 7 overall pick in the draft, and there are several directions Boston could go in with the selection.

Will the Red Sox draft a college player or a high school player? Will they opt for a position player or a pitcher? Could they consider one of several injured hurlers whose stocks seemingly have plummeted?

Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington and director of amateur scouting Mike Rikard last week said the organization is open-minded about who they’ll draft with the No. 7 pick. Basically, it boils down to selecting the best player available, though it’s often difficult to pinpoint that player given all of the variables involved in baseball’s drafting process.

The MLB draft doesn’t come with the fanfare of other drafts. However, it’s still a very important day for the future of all 30 big league franchises. Let’s consider some players the Red Sox could target Monday.
