Red Sox’s Brandon Workman Undergoes Tommy John Surgery On Right Elbow

BOSTON — Brandon Workman finally went under the knife.

Workman, who was placed on the disabled list in April with a right elbow strain, underwent successful Tommy John surgery Monday, according to the Boston Red Sox. The surgery was performed by Dr. James Andrews in Pensacola, Fla.

Workman didn’t appear in a game this season before landing on the shelf. The right-hander received a second opinion from Andrews back in April, at which point he received a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection in the hopes of avoiding surgery. Former Red Sox outfielder Carl Crawford received a similar PRP injection in April 2012, and he, like Workman, ultimately underwent Tommy John surgery.

Workman went 1-10 with a 5.17 ERA in 19 appearances (15 starts) for the Red Sox last season. The 26-year-old was a key member of Boston’s bullpen down the stretch in 2013, however, and he even pitched the eighth inning of the Red Sox’s World Series-clinching Game 6 against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Monday’s surgery ended Workman’s 2015 season before it ever really started.
