It’s never good when you’re late to your own party.
The Stanley Cup was nowhere to be seen after the Chicago Blackhawks topped the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-0 to claim their third title in the last six seasons on Monday night. The silver chalice was noticeably absent from the festivities on the ice immediately following the final horn, as severe weather and road closures postponed the Blackhawks’ hoisting of the Cup.

According to ESPN.com’s Katie Strang, citing a source with knowledge of the situation, the group traveling with the trophy left their hotel that was located on the “outskirts of the city” right after puck drop, but their trip to the United Center was anything but easy. It was, however, like something out of “The Fast and the Furious.”
In the ultimate definition of #BecauseItsTheCup, Strang reports the crew and Lord Stanley received a police escort that reportedly hit speeds of 100 mph during the frantic drive to the stadium.
After a fashionably late arrival, the Cup eventually made its way into the hands of the Blackhawks, who celebrated their first championship on home ice since 1938. We’re guessing the wait was worth it.
