Russell Wilson is a great, young quarterback who’s led the Seattle Seahawks to two straight Super Bowls in just three NFL seasons, and yet it seems as though he could end up finishing out his rookie contract without an extension.

NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reported Monday that the Seahawks have begun contract talks with star linebacker Bobby Wagner, but there hasn’t been any negotiating with Wilson. Wilson’s agent, Mark Rodgers, reached out to Seattle, but former NFL quarterback Brady Quinn believes that if there’s no deal in place by training camp, the 26-year-old will test free agency.

“Does it sound crazy that Seattle could let Wilson play out the final year of his contract without offering a competitive extension?” Quinn wrote in his latest Football By Football column. “Yes it does. But actions speak louder than words. If the Seahawks continue to focus on building everywhere around Wilson, perhaps there is a belief they could play any QB and get the same results?

“I don’t believe that’s the case, but I imagine it’s difficult for Wilson to not let his mind go there when extensions have been awarded to (safety) Earl Thomas, (cornerback) Richard Sherman, (running back) Marshawn Lynch and now potentially Bobby Wagner in the past year.”
