Christian Vazquez’s recovery appears to be progressing nicely.

The Boston Red Sox catcher participated in some light throwing Thursday for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery during spring training.

“It’s a significant day in his rehab,” manager John Farrell told reporters in Houston, via The Providence Journal. “I know he was ecstatic to be able to put a ball back in his hand for the first time.”

Vazquez will not return to the Red Sox this season, but Farrell said the plan is for him to participate in fall instructional league and winter ball.

“He’s got a long way to go, but everything to date — regaining full range of motion, full extension, all that — has been on schedule,” Farrell told reporters. “Now, the next phase begins. Every person is going to respond differently to that surgery. To date, it’s gone smooth for him.”

The 24-year-old Vazquez played in 55 major league games as a rookie last season, posting a .240/.308/.309 slash line with one home run and 20 RBIs. He would have entered the season as the Red Sox’s No. 1 catcher.

“I feel good,” Vazquez said Thursday, via The Providence Journal. “No soreness.”
