Didier Drogba might use Montreal as a base for an attempt to rule over another kingdom.

The Montreal Impact have acquired Drogba’s Major League Soccer rights from the Chicago Fire, clearing the way for his arrival in the Canadian city, ESPN’s Jeff Carlisle reported Sunday, citing sources. Drogba strongly is considering signing an 18-month contract worth over $3 million with MLS and Montreal, according to the report.

Drogba, a free-agent striker, had been in negotiations with the Fire and MLS, but he changed direction when Montreal registered its interest in his services. Drogba reportedly prefers Montreal over Chicago, and the teams agreed to trade his rights (the discovery claim on Drogba that the Fire submitted to MLS earlier this summer entitles it to compensation from another team) in exchange for “a substantial amount of targeted and regular allocation money ‘well in excess of $100,000.’ ”

Drogba, 37, forged a legendary career with Premier League club Chelsea, helping the Blues win four league titles, four FA Cups, three Football League Cups and one UEFA Champions League title in two stints between 2004 and 2015. Drogba earned the nickname “The King of Wembley” for his goal-scoring exploits in the finals of major tournament, many of which took place at Wembley Stadium in London.

If Drobga truly hops to reign over North American soccer, a mountain in one of its northernmost outposts seems like an appropriate starting point.
