The Detroit Lions improved to 9-4 with a win over the Chicago Bears on Sunday, but they left Week 14 with an injury to their most valuable player.

Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford suffered two different injuries to his right (throwing) hand.

ESPN’s Michael Rothstein provided a gruesome description of the veteran quarterback’s injury, writing “the top of Stafford’s finger is now bent downwards at a 90-degree angle and he has no control over the top part of it.”

Stafford, who has led an NFL-record eight fourth-quarter comebacks this season, is a legitimate MVP candidate. He’s thrown for 3,224 yards with 21 touchdowns and five interceptions.

Detroit’s lack of a reliable rushing attack — fourth-fewest rushing yards in the league — has put a lot of pressure on Stafford to perform at a high level each week.

The good news for the Lions is Stafford can at least play through the injury in its current stage.
