Boston College Fading in ACC Play As College Basketball Season Winds Down

No, it hasn?t been a pretty season for Boston College Eagles basketball. They are dead last in the ACC standings and have registered just eight wins in 28 tries this season.

But earlier this month, the young Eagles squad was able to hang its hat on the fact that it had been very competitive throughout conference play. They beat No. 15 Florida State while giving teams like N.C. State, Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech a run for their money.

As we enter the final week of the regular season, it looks like the Eagles are simply out of gas.

Young Eagles limping to finish line

Earlier on in conference play, the Eagles were a tough out. Nowadays, there isn?t much fight left in the dog.

The Eagles have lost 10 of 11 and look like they?ve tapped out. Their last three losses have come by a total of 70 points as they haven?t even been close against Maryland, Duke or Wake Forest. Their offense just isn?t able to keep up as they?ve notched 56 or less in seven of their last 10 games.

Road games haven?t been kind to the Eagles either as they haven?t won a true away game this season. Their only road win was a neutral site decision over college basketball juggernaut UC Riverside ? in overtime, no less.

Yellow Jackets, Hurricanes remain

The Eagles have two games left on the schedule with one at home and one away.

On Wednesday night, Georgia Tech will visit Conte Forum and the Eagles will journey to Miami on Saturday.

The Yellow Jackets visit figures to be a winnable game as the two teams are tied for last in the ACC standings at 3-11, although Georgia Tech has two more wins overall (10-18). The Eagles dropped the first meeting of the season 51-47 back on January 21st. There?s an interesting dynamic in play here as the Yellow Jackets were led by Glen Rice Jr.?s 11 points in the first meeting, but he has since been suspended indefinitely and will miss this affair. That should boost the Eagles chances.

Saturday?s contest in Miami figures to be a bigger challenge as the Hurricanes already won at Chestnut Hill this season. While the final score (76-54) indicates a blowout, the Eagles actually hung tough until the wheels came off in the second half. Durand Scott and Malcolm Grant combined for 35 of those points, so it?s important that the Eagles find a way to contain them.

At 17-10, Miami is probably on the wrong side of the NCAA Tournament bubble right now and they?ll definitely need a win here as well as a good showing in the ACC Tournament to get consideration. In any case, they won?t take the Eagles lightly. While a win might not mean much to them, a loss would crush any hope of March Madness for them.

The Eagles are assured of losing at least 21 games this season but earning a win in either of the two final games ? particularly in the regular season finale against Miami ? would provide a serious boost of confidence to the Eagles confidence heading into next season.
