NFL Training Camp Injury Tracker: Injuries Taking Their Toll

Aug 21, 2023

NFL preseason is underway, with injuries piling up to starters all over the league.

Here are the injuries you need to know.

  • Terron Armstead, Dolphins OT, Leg

The Dolphins tackle was carted off the field in practice this week, failing to be able to put any weight on his leg. The early returns are that Armstead’s injury will not require surgery and that he’ll return for Week 1.

  • Jameson Williams, Lions, WR, Hamstring

Jameson Williams injured his hamstring and it’s expected that he’ll be sidelined for the remainder of the preseason. He’s unable to return until Week 7 due to suspension, giving Williams a ton of extra time to heal up his hamstring for the Lions playoff chase, but the lack of football activity could be concerning.

  • Haason Reddick, Eagles LB, Thumb

The Eagles’ All-Pro edge rusher suffered what many hoped to be a minor thumb injury in practice, but turned out to require surgery. The hope is that Reddick will return to the Eagles’ defense for Week 1, but it remains to be seen his true availability.

  • Marlon Humphrey, Ravens CB, Foot

The Ravens top defensive back is dealing with a foot injury that will require surgery. The expectation is that Humphrey will be out for at least a month, but it could be for longer. The Ravens signed Ronald Darby to immediately fill Humphrey’s void.

  • Matt Hennessy, Falcons Guard, Knee

Hennessy suffered a knee injury in training camp that will keep the offensive lineman out for the remainder of the season. The Falcons have officially placed him on Injured Reserve.

  • Treylon Burks, Titans WR, Leg

Treylon Burks came down awkward after making a catch in training camp, resulting in the wideout to be carted off the field. Initial concerns were squashed, as further testing revealed that Burks only had a sprain, keeping him out for a few weeks.

  • Russell Gage, Buccaneers WR, Knee

Gage suffered a non-contact knee injury that will keep him out for the rest of the season.

  • Mike Gesicki, Patriots TE, Shoulder

The first year Patriots tight end suffered a dislocated shoulder in practice that is expected to sideline for the next weeks with his Week 1 availability up in the air.

  • Cordarelle Patterson, Falcons RB, Soft Tissue

In a crowded, youthful Falcons backfield, Patterson is dealing with a soft tissue injury that is expected to keep him out for the next few weeks, likely the rest of training camp. Unfortunate timing for the aging running back looking to hold on to a spot.

  • Kenneth Walker III, Seahawks RB, Groin

The Seahawks second year running back Kenneth Walker III remains sidelined with a groin injury. Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll noted not much appeared on the MRI, so they want to be overly cautious so the injury doesn’t linger throughout the season. Walker remains sidelined.

  • Trai Turner, Saints Guard, Quadriceps

Trai Turner was a free agent until the Saints scooped him up at the start of training camp to bolster their offensive line when he went down in practice with a torn quadriceps on one of the opening days of Saints camp—an unfortunate injury for the former Pro-Bowl guard who waited awhile to find a new home.

  • Donovan Wilson, Cowboys Safety, Calf

Cowboys’ starting safety Donovan Wilson recently suffered a severe calf injury expected to keep him out for four to six weeks, threatening his Week 1 availability.

  • Jeff Okudah, Falcons CB, Ankle

The former number three overall pick was granted a new change of scenery with a change to Atlanta, but that will have to be delayed as Okudah was carted off the field with an ankle injury. The early returns were better than expected, but it is still assumed Okudah will not be ready for the start of the season.

  • Marlon Mack, Cardinals RB, Achillies

The Cardinals signed Marlon Mack to add depth, just for Mack to suffer an Achillies injury in practice. The injury is season ending.

  • Devon Witherspoon, Seahawks CB, Hamstring

The Seahawks fifth overall draft selection Devon Witherspoon suffered a hamstring injury that’s held him out of practice and the team’s preseason opener. Head coach Pete Carroll claims the injury is not serious, but that there is no timetable for his return.

  • Cooper Kupp, Rams WR, Hamstring

Kupp missed the final half of the 2022 season and is now dealing with a hamstring injury that could keep him sidelined for multiple weeks. The hope remains that Kupp will be able to return for Week 1 after an MRI, but Kupp’s injury history will have the Rams extra cautious.

  • Tim Patrick, Broncos WR, Leg

Patrick suffered a torn Achilles tendon in practice after missing all of the 2022 season with a torn ACL. An unfortunate break for Patrick in the biggest of ways, leaving him out all of 2023.

  • KJ Hamler, Free Agent WR, Heart

It was revealed that then-Broncos WR was diagnosed with pericarditis, a heart condition, after feeling chest pains while working out. The Broncos then waived Hamler, hoping to resign him early in the regular season once he’s cleared. Denver opted to waive Hamler instead of placing him on the NFI/Reserve list to keep him from being out for the entire season and save a roster spot.

  • Zack Moss, Colts RB, Arm

The Colts running back room has been in disarray with All-Pro Jonathan Taylor holding out for a new contract with owner Jim Irsay not budging, leaving Zack Moss as the lead back in the short-term, but he suffered a broken arm in practice. Moss underwent surgery, leaving himself with a six-week timetable to return, lining up hopefully for Week 1 if Taylor still has not returned.

  • Kadarius Toney, Chiefs WR, Knee

Kadarius Toney’s brief NFL career has been riddled with injuries, and he’s already got 2023 started with another. On the opening day of training camp in Kansas City, Toney suffered what seemed to be a minor knee tweak that Chiefs’ head coach Andy Reid later said required surgery for a torn meniscus. The hope is that Toney could be back for Week 1.

  • Jalen Ramsey, Dolphins CB, Knee

Jalen Ramsey was carted off but didn’t receive the same promising news as Burrow. While his ACL is intact, Ramsey will still require surgery and likely will be out until December.

  • Joe Burrow, Bengals QB, Calf

Joe Burrow gave the NFL community a scare when he was carted off the practice field. Early speculation was that it could have been his Achilles, but Bengals head coach Zac Taylor confirmed it was just a calf injury.
