Justin Verlander Commits Baseball’s Mental Error of the Year, Is Called for Balk After Hitting David DeJesus

Justin Verlander usually can be counted on at least for a quality start each time he steps onto the mound.

This time, however, Verlander produced one of the strangest pitches you will ever see in baseball.

Verlander was already having a tough day dealing with Oakland’s batters, when during the fifth inning, he threw what was initially deemed an illegal pitch, then officially noted as a balk.

The “pitch” hit Athletics’ outfielder David DeJesus in the foot, and he was awarded first base, moving the runner to second.

The correct balk call then was ruled, putting DeJesus back in the batters’ box and awarding second base to the runner.

Even Verlander thought the play was funny, saying “If I throw the ball straight to Victor, maybe they don’t call anything… I saw the video of it and I couldn’t help but laugh at myself.”
