Jonny Gomes’ Clutch Home Run, David Ortiz’s Huge Night at Plate Lead Red Sox to Game 4 Win (Photos)

The Red Sox vowed to move on from the bizarre ending that led to the Cardinals winning on a walk-off obstruction call, and they delivered on their promise, tying up the series 2-2 on Sunday night.

Game 4 didn’t end in typical fashion either, though, as Koji Uehara picked off Kolten Wong at first base for the final out to secure the Red Sox’ 4-2 victory.

Although the Cardinals got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the third, the Red Sox knotted up the score in the fifth inning when David Ortiz — who accounted for half of Boston’s hits on the night — led off the frame with a double into right-center field. Big Papi scored on a sacrifice fly by Stephen Drew later in the inning.

But it was Jonny Gomes who had the swing of the night. The outfielder wasn’t in the original lineup, but he found his way in there when Shane Victorino became a late scratch just prior to Game 4. Gomes smashed a three-run home run over the left field fence to give Boston the 4-1 lead.

Gomes’ passion and intensity were on full display as he rounded the bases, and he was greeted with some classic beard-pulling upon entering the dugout.

The Red Sox held on to win 4-2. With the series tied at two games apiece, Boston will take on St. Louis on Monday at 8:07 p.m. EST.
