Vernon Davis is quite a handful for opposing defenses. On Sunday, the Rams might have taken that expression too seriously.
Davis gave the Rams’ defensive backs some problems throughout the game on Sunday, catching four passes for 84 yards and a touchdown in the 49ers’ 23-13 win. The Rams apparently got sick of Davis dragging them around the field all afternoon, and safety T.J. McDonald took matters into his own hands — literally.
After hauling in a nice pass from quarterback Colin Kaepernick early in the third quarter on Sunday, Davis turned to run upfield , looking to gain a few more yards. He ended up gaining 22 yards on the play before McDonald finally took the big tight end down, but it was the manner by which McDonald took him down that caused the biggest problem for Davis.
Just after pulling the pass down, Davis ran toward the sideline but McDonald dove out and grabbed a hold of him — only what he grabbed just so happened to be Davis’ nether-regions. So, while Davis fought to pick up a few more yards and shed the tackler, McDonald held on for dear life. With McDonald grasping firmly at his groin area, Davis crumbled to the ground and was left writhing in pain.
