Some Chicago Bears fans will get their wish Sunday.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Wednesday that the Bears will bench quarterback Jay Cutler for this weekend’s matchup against the Detroit Lions at Soldier Field and turn to backup Jimmy Clausen.

Cutler signed a seven-year, $126 million contract extension with $54 million guaranteed in January, coming off a 2013 season in which the Bears went 8-8 and just missed the playoffs after a Week 17 loss. But this season, Cutler has been wildly inconsistent, and Chicago sits in last place in the NFC North with a 5-9 record. Cutler also leads the NFL in interceptions with 18.

Still, Clausen isn’t a sure bet. The 27-year-old Notre Dame product hasn’t started a game since 2010, when he was a rookie for the Carolina Panthers. That season, he threw just three touchdown passes and nine interceptions in 13 games and had a 1-9 record in 10 starts.

Besides 2010, Clausen only has seen an NFL field on three other occasions in garbage-time appearances this season.
