Tommy Heinsohn will receive another honor from the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2015 when he is inducted as a coach, the organization announced Saturday.
Heinsohn coached the Boston Celtics for eight-plus seasons from 1969-70 through 1977-78 and amassed a 427-263 record, along with two NBA championships (1973-74 and 1975-76) and six playoff appearances. As the Boston Herald’s Steve Bulpett pointed out, Heinsohn is just the fourth person to make the Hall as a coach and a player.
Heinsohn was inducted as a player in 1986, after averaging 18.6 points and 8.8 rebounds per game in a nine-year career with the Celtics from 1956-57 through 1964-65. He won eight championships as a member of the Celtics, and his No. 15 hangs in the TD Garden rafters.
In fact, Heinsohn is the only person to be part of all 17 of the Celtics’ championships as a player, coach or broadcaster.
Heinsohn might not be the only person in the Class of 2015 with Celtics ties. Former Celtics head coach Bill Fitch and guard Jo Jo White are among the 12 finalists.
