The New England Revolution have broken with tradition.

The Revolution unveiled their new, secondary uniforms Tuesday at a launch party at Boston’s House of Blues. The Revs’ new uniforms have red as the primary color, departing from the mostly white strip the team wore on its travels in the first 19 years of its existence.

The Revolution’s red uniforms are inspired by the flag of New England. Militias in the New England colonies flew the flag during the Revolutionary war days, but the club has resurrected it in recent years and given it new meaning.

“Dating back to 1775, this flag represented the New England colonies in the Revolutionary War,” a tag on the lower left corner of the jersey reads. “This jersey celebrates the bond between the club and its supporters, who fly the flag today.”

The Revolution will wear the new uniforms in games against opponents whose primary colors don’t clash with their Red look. They will wear the blue primary uniforms in other games.
