Americans have been enjoying horse racing for over a century, but few horses have managed to make it to the top of the ranks in that span.

For trainers and breeders, the Triple Crown is the ultimate goal. A win in the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes will put a horse’s name among elite company.

While many thoroughbreds have come close, only a handful have won the ultimate prize. In fact, only 10 horses have been Triple Crown winners since Sir Barton became the first in 1919, and no one has been able to pull off the feat since Affirmed in 1978.
