Freddie Roach Puts Damper On Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor Rumors

Floyd Mayweather Jr. fighting Conor McGregor might be nothing more than a pipe dream.

McGregor, who previously said he’s open to facing Mayweather in a boxing match, got everyone talking over the weekend when he tweeted a mock promo poster featuring the would-be combatants. Mayweather added fuel to the speculation by not ruling out a boxing-versus-mixed martial arts superfight, but legendary boxing trainer Freddie Roach since has thrown cold water on the fire.

“If he comes, he comes. I’ll help him. I like helping people. That’s no problem,” said Roach, acknowledging in an interview with Fight Hub TV that someone reached out to him about training McGregor, who currently holds the UFC featherweight title. “But I’m not going to train him to fight Mayweather. I’d have to train him for at least three years to get him ready for Mayweather.

“He’s good at MMA,” Roach added of McGregor. “But boxing? I don’t know.”

Three years seems like an eternity, especially with McGregor still in the prime of his MMA career — his recent dispute with UFC notwithstanding — and Mayweather technically retired since defeating Andre Berto in September to run his boxing record to 49-0. Plus, Mayweather is 39 years old, whereas McGregor turns just 28 in July, and ironing out the particulars of such a fight would be complicated.

But we suppose that won’t stop everyone from dreaming.
