Larry Johnson Sent Away From Chiefs While NFL Investigates Offensive Comments Larry Johnson is in trouble once again.

The oft-troubled Chiefs running back was sent away from the team while Kansas City and the NFL investigate his use of a gay slur on his Twitter page, according to ESPN.com.

Johnson used the slur toward one of his Twitter followers after the running back questioned Haley's coaching credentials following Sunday night's 37-7 loss to the Chargers.

According to the Kansas City Star, the tweets were posted to the "Toonicon" account, Johnson's online alias.

After the rout, one tweet read: "My father got more creditentials than most of these pro coaches." That was followed by: "My father played for the coach from "rememeber the titans". Our coach played golf. My father played for redskins briefley. Our coach. Nuthn."

That tweets drew responses, including one that referred to a nightclub incident last year in which Johnson was accused of spitting in someone's face.

Johnson's response included a gay slur, and the final post read: "Make me regret it. Lmao. U don't stop my checks. Lmao. So 'tweet' away."

Johnson's account since has been made private.

Johnson then used the anti-gay term again on Monday as he told reporters he would not comment on the matter.

Haley refused to address the matter on Tuesday.

Although Johnson released an apology for making the comment, the NFL is investigating, following pressure from a national gay rights advocacy organization. The Chiefs are also investigating whether Johnson violated a contract provision that would allow them to cut him with reduced financial obligation. The 30-year-old signed a five-year contract extension in 2007 that could be worth up to $45 million.

Last spring, after Johnson pleaded guilty to disturbing the peace in a different incident, an arbitrator ruled that he could be released without being owed $3.5 million in guaranteed money.

The Chiefs told Johnson he will not be allowed to practice with Kansas City or participate in team activities until the matter is resolved. He has not yet been suspended.

Earlier this week, Johnson released an apology to Haley, his team and his fans.

"I regret my actions," he said through a spokesman. "The words were used by me in frustration, and they were not appropriate. I did not intend to offend anyone, but that is no excuse for what I said."

On Tuesday, Johnson added, "I was not a good role model yesterday, and hopefully, I can become a better role model. We all make mistakes, and the challenge is to learn from them. I will do my best to learn from this one as I move toward becoming a better person, teammate and member of the Kansas City Chiefs team and community."
