Former Yankees World Series MVP John Wetteland, 43, was hospitalized on Thursday afternoon for what local officials referred to as "mental health issues."

A woman at Wetteland's Texas home reportedly called authorities asking for help with "a possibly suicidal person," the Denton County Sheriff's office told ESPN.com.

"She said he was complaining of being depressed and contemplating suicide," Sgt. Roger Griggs told the Web site.

Police said that after they arrived, Wetteland came out of the house with his hands in the air, asking for help.

Wetteland spent 12 seasons in the major leagues as a relief pitcher with the Dodgers, Expos, Yankees and Rangers. A three-time All-Star, he had 43 saves for New York in 1996 and won World Series MVP honors as the Yanks topped the Braves in six games. He retired in 2000 and has been the bullpen coach for the Mariners since December of 2008.
