In first place following another dominant downhill run, U.S. Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn hooked her ski on a gate and fell during the slalom leg of the super-combined on Thursday and was disqualified.

American teammate Julia Mancuso captured the silver medal in the event, claiming her second silver in two days and the first U.S. medal in women's Olympic combined or super-combined since Gretchen Fraser's silver at the 1948 St. Moritz Games.

Vonn, who won Wednesday's downhill event despite a sore shin, was 0.18 seconds ahead of German rival Maria Riesch's pace at the first slalom checkpoint, but she suffered a fall when she failed to get her right ski tip around a right-hand gate, thus ending her hopes of capturing a second gold medal this Olympics.

"It hurts so bad," Vonn told The Associated Press. "It's one thing to do the downhill, but the super-combined is really tough on my shin. I tried as hard as I could."

It was unclear whether or not Vonn would race this week in Vancouver, and she was in pain after Wednesday's downhill victory.

"It's not good. It's really hurting and I'm just struggling with it," Vonn said. "I need a little bit more time and therapy to try to get it to feel better."

Vonn led Riesch by 0.33 seconds after the downhill run, but after the fall, Riesch was able to win the gold with a total time of 2:09.14.

Mancuso, 0.94 seconds behind Riesch, will try to build on her success next Wednesday when she will defend the Olympic giant-slalom title she won in Turin four years ago.
